Smoked Mackerel Fillets
A rich, delicious fish, perfect for any time of the day
Swimming in vast shoals all around the coast of Britain, mackerel are torpedo-shaped fish with impossibly silvery skin and rippling mottled stripes. They're an oily fish with softly flaking, creamy flesh that has plenty of flavour. This makes it perfect for smoking: the richness of the flesh balances beautifully with the earthiness of the smoke. Smoked mackerel fillets are a tremendously versatile staple to have on hand in the freezer for simple lunches or satisfying suppers.

While it would seem that mackerel are abundant and plentiful, any species of fish can find itself in a precarious position when fishing becomes too aggressive. To make sure our native mackerel are around for generations to come, at Coombe Farm Organic we partner with fishermen who are committed to sustainable practices they follow the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards. This means they take only suitably sized fish at appropriate times of the year and always with consideration for the ocean environment.

At Coombe Farm we believe in sustainability. And we live it. Regarding our packaging:
Your delivery box is made of 100% recycled paper and is 100% recyclable.
To keep your order frozen we use ice packs which will retain a low temperature for a long period of time. Reuse them for a picnic or simply snip, empty the water and pop in your plastic recycling.
We use paper pulp sheets to insulate the box. They are great for craft projects or can also simply be recycled with paper waste.
We deliver our organic produce Tuesday – Saturday and you will be able to choose your preferred delivery day at the checkout. The delivery charge is £3.95.
Freezing is the most natural way of preserving food. And as here at Coombe Farm Organic we believe in slow-grown, healthy food, a form of preservation that doesn’t need artificial additives gets a big tick from us.
Fisheries catch fillet and freeze all sustainable and organic fish before it arrives to us by blast freezing. It’s done at the point of the fishmongers filleting the fish, to temperatures of -26°C. This locks in all the freshness, flavour and nutritional value and means you get the longest possible shelf life at home once you’ve defrosted it.
It also guarantees it will arrive with you in tiptop condition - confidently delivering fresh fish would be much more challenging.
Sustainability is a key concept when it comes to choosing the fish that you eat. It's measured in three ways. Firstly, the number of fish taken from the sea must leave behind a healthy, productive population that can reproduce quickly enough to support the levels at which they're fished. Secondly, environmental impact on habitats, ecosystems and other species must be minimised. And thirdly, fisheries must be well managed, be humane and be able to adapt to environmental changes. At Coombe Farm Organic, we work with fishing partners who fish to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards with a responsible attitude that reflects our organic farming ethos.

Smoked mackerel has a robust flavour that really wants to be the star of the show. Serve it simple flaked as part of a mixed deli board with cold meats, strong cheeses and fruity chutneys. Or add it to a crispy seasonal salad with lots of crunchy textures (peppery radishes are especially good) to balance the softness of the mackerel's flesh. Mixed with some white fish, smoked mackerel fillets are a flavoursome addition to fishcakes, and are an excellent choice for homemade sushi. Pair it with hot horseradish in a speedy pâté or enjoy it grilled and served with a sharp gooseberry purée.

Very helpful on the phone . The delivery is very prompt and the chicken I ordered is excellent . It is so good to know it in organic . I love the bone broth they do , very tasty .
Yeah - delivery was fine and packing was good. But you should ignore any rubbish legislation about recycling. There is a lot of packaging and all of it can be collected by you and re-used for my next order. You might say you are not permitted by govt regulations - but I say why should we listen to people who clearly do not have our interests at heart. We shouls take back our power and be our own authority and just be good - common sense individuals. I want to recycle this material - so can you collect it from me and use it again - I won't tell if you won't - who's in charge here.....
