This year we’ve made the decision to only attend two food events, letting us really throw ourselves into them and making them extra special. Our first stop on May Bank Holiday was River Cottage Spring Fair, hosted by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Our second will be Valley Fest in August.
We chose these two events to give us the chance to offer something bigger and better than we’ve ever done before. River Cottage offered us the opportunity to take on a larger stall than usual, offering a range of activities. We jumped at the chance!
For the first time, we ran a fresh meat counter. It went down a storm, if we say so ourselves. Luckily the weather was glorious and everyone was in full-on BBQ mood. We also wanted to get more involved with demonstrations, so we started with one of our very favourite things: burgers. All the kids and parents who took part loved getting stuck in – and no-one minded getting sticky hands. There was a selection of ingredients for the kids to add to their mince before squishing and shaping it into their very own, bespoke burger. We hope they’re inspired to try it again at home.
The River Cottage team were also keen for us to get involved with the fire pit talks and demonstrations. We didn’t take much persuading. Cooking delicious organic meat outside over an open fire? Of course we wanted to talk about that! As well as explaining why quality produce cooks and tastes so much better, we put our money where our mouth was and cooked some of our cuts over the fire pit. That meant everyone could sample our organic range and see exactly what we were on about.
We must give a shout out to everyone at River Cottage for organising a fantastic weekend, it was jam packed with entertainment – from sand pits and games to cocktail making and cooking master classes – so all ages were kept amused and entertained. We definitely recommend you make a note in your diary of next year’s River Cottage Spring Fair.
We’re now getting excited about the second foodie festival we’re attending in 2018. Valley Fest takes place from the 3rd to the 5th of August in Somerset’s Chew Valley. Great music and family fun are promised. Excellent barbecue is 100% guaranteed.
